2011 NFL Draft: Is Ryan Mallett Worthy of a 1st Round Selection?

Arkansas Star Quarterback A Major Source of Controversy
Peter King noted this week that Ryan Mallett is starting to rove into the dangerous field of "baggage."
"Some teams, including one with a major quarterback need, are deathly afraid of all the off-field noise about Mallett. Much of it is unsubstantiated, but I was read a report by a personnel man on Mallett the other day, and it was scathing. I think he has just as much of a chance to go in the second round as in the first, and most people in the know think Washington's Jake Locker will be the third quarterback picked, after Gabbert and Newton."
Assuming this isn't disinformation used to help an interested team avoid trading up for his selection, the red flags are warranted. Those types of "character issues" were one of the major reasons why JaMarcus Russell and Ryan Leaf has become the poster boy for first round busts.
