Green Bay Packers GM Ted Thompson has built a reputation for trading down in drafts and gathering as many picks as possible.
But during the 2009 NFL Draft he went against his philosophy.
After securing nose tackle B.J Raji with the ninth overall pick in the draft, Thompson saw something he wanted. And as all Packer fans know, when Ted Thompson sees something he wants, for better or worse, he's going to go out and get it.
Ted Thompson wanted USC outside linebacker Clay Matthews, and he gave New England a second-round pick and two third-round picks to get him.
Many people liked this pick on draft day, while others criticized the Packers for trading three picks to bring in the former Trojan.
Either way, Thompson felt the third-generation star would fit in nicely with the Packers new 3-4 scheme.
He was supposed to learn behind Packer Pro-Bowler Aaron Kampman, but Kampman struggled transitioning into the 3-4 defense and went down with a season-ending injury ear...
