Brett Favre and Deadspin: The Death of Sports Journalism

Does anyone remember when sports journalism was set aside to be a sacred venue—a small piece of the media quarantined from the larger monster that turned trashier and flakier by the week.
Well, those days are gone, and meaningful commentary and analysis iare gradually being overtaken by opportunistic parasites looking to latch scandalous hooks into big-name athletes. The larger the popularity of a sports figure, the more attractive the target.
As sports media devolved to blogs, tweets, and trash-collecting web hubs, one has to wonder if future generations of gifted athletes might think twice before turning professional and signing away the right to avoid slanderous schemers.
Although pro athletes now hear this same message at rookie orientations, I will tell them again: “There are people out there looking to ruin your life for personal gain.”
