Greg McElroy Reportedly Released by New York Jets, Expected to Retain Matt Simms

The New York Jets released quarterback Greg McElroy and have kept Matt Simms on the 53-man roster heading into the regular season, according to Randy Lange of NewYorkJets.com:
Greg McElroy was the biggest name among the players released. McElroy, the seventh-round draft choice in 2011, was released with an injury.
Chris Mortensen of ESPN originally reported the news:
In a preseason where all of New York's quarterbacks struggled to separate from the pack, Simms played the entire fourth game and impressed. He completed 33 of 44 passes for 285 yards and didn't have any turnovers.
Apparently, it was enough to convince the Jets' coaching staff to elect to keep him over McElroy. Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez will remain ahead of him on the depth chart for now, but the team's quarterback situation is far from settled.
