Just Imagine: The All-NFL Rugby Team

With the World Cup behind us, so are the lamentations of commentators that simply don't understand why soccer isn't more popular in the United States—for now at least. Their gripe is understandable. Soccer is a truly international game, and with America's rabid sports culture, it would seem like the game would be a natural fit. But beyond soccer, the failure on the part of America to adopt the sport of rugby absolutely perplexes me. It's a sport that combines the finesse of basketball with the brutality of football in a fast paced, non-stop manner. The easy answer to the question of why rugby isn't more popular is that the best potential rugby players in America are immediately placed in a helmet and shoulder pads as soon as they're old enough to walk, and as a result are never even introduced to the sport. But every now and then I find myself dreaming about how fantastic a rugby team the United States could field if they re-focused their resources towards the sport. ...
