Michael Sam Leaves Montreal Alouettes Training Camp for Personal Reasons

Michael Sam has struggled in his pursuit of a career in the NFL, and his time in the CFL may be coming to a close.
The 2014 seventh-round draft pick reportedly left the Montreal Alouettes on Friday for undisclosed personal reasons, per Tom Pelissero of USA Today. Rod Smith of TSN provided the full statement from the team:
Sam, the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL, headed up north back in May after being waived by the St. Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys last year. His performance at the NFL Veteran Combine also failed to attract the interest of any teams.
As a result, Sam inked a one-year deal with Montreal that had an option for 2016.
"I'm just here to play football," he said at the time, per Greg A. Bedard of The MMQB. "I'm not trying to do anything historic, just trying to help the team win games."
