NFL Free Agency 2010: Miami Dolphins Re-Sign QB Chad Pennington

In a somewhat surprising move, the Miami Dolphins have opted to re-sign quarterback Chad Pennington on the same day he became an unrestricted free agent.

The one-year deal will pay him $2.5 million in 2010, and also includes a $1.515 million bonus to be paid by Miami if the team decides to trade him this season.

The Dolphins' starting quarterback entering each of the past two seasons, Pennington posted the second best passer rating in the NFL in 2008, but struggled early on in 2009 before a shoulder injury ended his season after just three games.

Analysis

While I did expect the Dolphins to re-sign Pennington in my 2010 offseason plan posted two days ago, I initially ended the 2009 season with the feeling that the team would let him walk, as Chad Henne, Tyler Thigpen, and Pat White seemed unlikely to be moved.
