NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi: Steve Smith To New England Patriots Possible

Spectulating on the state of the Carolina Panthers and the New England Patriots, the NFL Network's Michael Lombardi suggested the possibility of a trade between the two franchises. Clearly, this does nothing to guarantee a deal actually coming to fruition, but the logic behind the deal that Lombardi outlined is solid.

Lombardi argued that the rebuilding Panthers organization may look to acquire draft picks in their restocking effort after an abysmal 2-14 season. The 2010 campaign resulted in the axing of long-time head coach John Fox and earned the first selection of this year's draft and, while that pick is nice, they already dealt their second-rounder. What turned out to be the 33rd overall pick this year was shipped out last offseason, so that the team could move up to select wide receiver Armanti Edwards.
