What Caleb Hanie’s Release from Denver Broncos Means for Brock Osweiler

The Denver Broncos announced on Saturday that they had released Caleb Hanie, who was thought by many to be the No. 2 quarterback behind Peyton Manning (via NFL.com). Instead, rookie Brock Osweiler will back up Manning starting Sunday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In the preseason Osweiler accumulated a humble 139 yards on 33 pass attempts, one touchdown and an interception to top it off.
Drafted in the second round by the Broncos this year, Osweiler was thought to be the next Manning protege, a player who would stick around and learn from the Hall of Fame quarterback for a few years before taking over in the wake of Manning's retirement. 
That's probably still the plan, but the reality Osweiler finds himself in now is that the NFL is a league in which a lot of starting quarterbacks don't play the entire season.
