On Wednesday, Indianapolis Star columnist Gregg Doyel penned a story about Colton Crace, a teenager who had been bedridden for 10 days while recovering from chemotherapy.
Colton is an Indianapolis Colts fan. On Tuesday, he was trying to do leg lifts and knee bends. On Wednesday, he was walking—thanks in part to an autographed football from Andrew Luck.
Here’s how Doyel described Colton—who is deaf and lost an eye and a kidney as a baby—receiving the ball:
Slowly, cautiously, Colton kept walking.
Now he was holding the football, and now this kid – this kid who hadn’t been out of bed in more than a week, whose goal 24 hours earlier was to do knee bends while on his back – was slowly walking the hallway for exercise.
“What a beamed up smile!” says his mom, Jodee Crace. “What a joy.”
It’s awesome that a small gesture from Luck had such a great impact on Colton and his family.
