Brian Westbrook, Brad Childress, and the Willy Nilly Chilly Philly Conspiracy

The question that keeps popping up is this: Why are the Minnesota Vikings not in a hurry to determine whether Brian Westbrook should be their third-down running back or not?
 
Since he was released by the Eagles, most football analysts concluded Minnesota was the likely landing spot.
 
Since previous third-down back Chester Taylor left for the Bears, Westbrook became the clear favorite and best available fit for the Vikings' job opening.
 
He has proven to have the speed and agility to run for first downs on third and longs, and the necessary receiving and blocking skills for the West Coast Offense.
 
On March 20, the Viking Update reported that if the Vikings don't draft a running back prospect, Westbrook could then become an option.  That is strange. 
 
Do the Vikings really want a rookie or any other unproven blocker protecting the back of quarterback Brett Favre on critical third downs?
