San Francisco 49ers President Jed York likes to talk a big game. Following a gut-wrenching 27-24 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles before a nationally televised audience, York commented to ESPN: "We are going to win the division."
Two months later, after the 49ers playoff hopes were dashed by the St. Louis Rams in a 25-17 loss, York proclaimed that there would be changes. By nightfall, head coach Mike Singletary had been fired.
York also promised that money would be no object when it came to making the changes necessary to get the 49ers to where most experts thought they would be, at the top of the NFC West and hosting a playoff game.
York and the 49ers went after the biggest fish in the coaching sea, Stanford head coach and former NFL quarterback, Jim Harbaugh, who took a 1-11 program to a BCS bowl game victory in four years.
