Kris Brown: Houston Texans Waive Kicker, Sign Running Back Derrick Ward

The Houston Texans made a handful of cuts and roster moves Friday to wiggle their way down to a 53-man roster.

Most notably, kicker Kris Brown, cornerback Jacques Reeves, running back Chris Henry, and quarterback John David Booty were all waived. And they’re not done.

“Don’t be surprised if we make four or five more moves and be a different team on Sunday,” head coach Gary Kubiak said.

After waiving the team’s second-leading rusher in the preseason, running back Jeremiah Johnson, the Texans agreed to terms with free agent running back Derrick Ward.

Ward rushed for 1,025 yards with the New York Giants in 2008 before signing with the Buccaneers in 2009. He was cut last week.

“We hope Derrick can run like he did when he was a very productive player with the Giants,” Kubiak said. “He’s run a lot of zone plays like we run. He’s also played some special teams.”
