NFL: Atlanta Falcons Jump To No. 5 in ESPN.com’s Power Rankings

After slipping all the way to No. 13 after Week 1’s overtime loss at Pittsburgh, the Falcons have climbed the ESPN.com power rankings all the way to No. 5.

Some of this is due to them taking down the defending Super Bowl champion Saints in overtime on Sunday, 27-20. But what the Steelers are doing defensively may be more of a contributing factor.

The Falcons managed just nine points, failing to find the end zone in Week 1 at Pittsburgh.

Now, after the Steelers’ defense climbed the NFL ranks to the top defense in terms of scoring, allowing just 11 points per game and giving up just two touchdowns—one through the air and one on the ground with their second-teamers on the field late in last week’s 38-13 win at Tampa Bay—the Falcons’ Week 1 struggles don’t look so bad.

In fact, some are whispering possible Super Bowl aspirations for the dirty birds.
