Niners Could Find Alex Smith's Replacement in Second Round
The San Francisco 49ers definitely scored when they filled their need for a head coach by hiring Jim Harbaugh away from Stanford. Now all they need to do is find a way to score in filling the team's other glaring need: starting quarterback.
This is where things get complicated. Harbaugh has said some nice things about Alex Smith, but the notion of Smith getting yet another shot to develop into a capable NFL quarterback is beyond mindboggling.
Luckily, such things can be solved by the NFL Draft, and the possibility exists for Harbaugh and the Niners to do just that.
The 49ers hold the No. 7 pick in the draft, which naturally means that they have an outside shot at Auburn's Cam Newton and Missouri's Blaine Gabbert.
