NFL Draft Rumors: Alex Smith Contract Offer Means 49ers Will Not Draft Gabbert

Amid reports the San Francisco 49ers offered Alex Smith a one-year contract prior to the lockout, the 49ers continue to prepare for the NFL Draft.

So who will they take?

If the 49ers are serious about keeping Smith for one more year, it means they have no intention of drafting a quarterback in the first round. Even if Smith declines, the 49ers then would go after another veteran. Of course, that is assuming Smith gets any other offers that would include him being the starter.

I can see Smith getting lots of offers to be a backup, but after his performance in San Francisco the last few years, Smith's days as a starter are over until an injury to another starter gives him an opening. If the 49ers are offering him the starting gig again, he should take it.
