What Does Matthew Stafford’s Lucrative Extension Mean for the Detroit Lions?

It's been a good year to be a quarterback in the NFL.
So far in this offseason, Tony Romo of the Dallas Cowboys, Joe Flacco of the Baltimore Ravens and Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers all cashed in with lucrative extensions.
Now, it appears that Matthew Stafford of the Detroit Lions is going to be the next to follow suit, at least according to ESPN:
The annual compensation on the extension comes in slightly less than the $18 million per year that Romo got, but that $43 million in guaranteed money more than makes up for it.
In fact, as Chris Burke of Sports Illustrated pointed out, it's more guaranteed money than Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints received in his last deal.
As Bleacher Report's own Ian Kenyon relays, that places Stafford in some rarefied air when it comes to the bank accounts of NFL players:
